Dressed Up Rice Crispy Treats

Submitted by Sophia Lo

For maple blueberry rice krispie treats:

5 cups of Rice Krispie cereal

1 bag of marshmallows

1 stick of butter

3 tablespoons of maple syrup

Freeze dried blueberries to taste

Set aside most of the Rice Krispies cereal (save about 1/3 of cup of cereal for Step 2!) and as many freeze dried blueberries as your heart desires.

Add the maple syrup to a pan on medium heat, and once the syrup starts bubbling, add the reserved rice krispies to toast them in the pan. Throw in a pinch of salt! Once the rice krispies are covered in syrup and toasted, add them to the plain cereal.

Melt butter on the stove over medium heat, taking the time to make browned butter makes the rice krispie treats extra delicious :)

Once the butter is melted, add in the bag of marshmallows and stir until those are also melted. Can also add a little extra maple syrup here, if you want to lean into the flavor!

Pour the marshmallow mixture over the rice krispie mixture, mix, and then add everything to a buttered baking pan. Let the rice krispies set, then cut and enjoy!

For hojicha chocolate rice krispie treats:

5 cups of Rice Krispie cereal

1 bag of marshmallows

1 stick of butter

2-4 tea bags of hojicha

1/2 cup of dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate bar

Set aside your 5 cups of rice krispie cereals and chocolate in a bowl.

Melt butter on the stove over medium heat, taking the time to make browned butter makes the rice krispie treats extra delicious :)

Once the butter is melted, add in the bag of marshmallows and stir until those are also melted. Add a pinch of salt, then cut open the tea bags and add the tea leaves to the marshmallow and butter mixture. I usually add 3 tea bags’ worth, but you can add more or less depending on how strong you want the hojicha flavor to be.

Pour the marshmallow mixture over the rice krispie cereal and chocolate, then leave in a buttered baking pan so the rice krispie treats can set, then cut and enjoy!

Bonus: After the rice krispies set, melt more chocolate and drizzle over the treats to make them extra fancy.
